Conrad Hotel Dubai – Excellent central hotel with large tropical garden
General Info and Location
Conrad Hotel Dubai is located in Dubai’s city centre, along Sheikh Zayed Road, directly across the street from the World Trade Centre and the Dubai Convention Centre. The hotel is also conveniently close to the Dubai metro, with the entrance to the subway station, World Trade Centre, literally in front of the hotel’s entrance. Dubai Airport is around 10km away, making airport transportation easy.
On the other side of the street, near the market stalls, there are several cafes and small restaurants, and for shops and more restaurants, Dubai Mall is only three stations away on the metro. A taxi is required to get to any of the beaches in Dubai.
The hotel is relatively new, it opened in November 2013, and this is is evident in the interior which feels fresh. The hotel building is adorned with dark glass windows and occupies 54 floors. Perhaps most impressive is the hotel’s grand lobby, boasting large pillars, a large illuminated gold patterned wall and a beautiful ceiling.
The hotel has 555 rooms divided into 364 Deluxe Rooms, 123 Executive rooms, 44 Deluxe Suites, 20 Executive Suites, two Conrad Suites and two Royal Suites. The hotel occupies 54 floors, but during our test visit only the rooms on the 20th floor and above were in use, which meant that virtually all guests got a decent view.
We were assigned a room on the 32nd floor with a magnificent view of the coastline and the Arabian Gulf. Unfortunately, the window was quite dirty. The hotel staff explained that it is because of all the sand that gets blown up by the wind, making it difficult to keep the windows clean even if they are washed regularly.
The deluxe room was impressive in size, even though this category of room is the hotel’s standard room. The room consisted of a large king-size bed, work desk, two armchairs with side tables, a dressing table and a TV unit with a large widescreen TV. The interior was very sober in beige, while furniture was in dark brown with details in a marble-like material.
The bathroom was also a generous size, and consisted of a large walk-in shower, a large bath, toilet and no less than two sinks. A nice detail was the TV screen above the bathtub which was so discreetly built into the wall that I did not notice it at first. It was the remote control in a small box at the side of the bathtub that gave the first clue. In actual fact, the remote only offered the on/off command and the TV displayed the same channel as the regular TV in the room.
Otherwise, the room offered a tea maker, a Nespresso coffee machine, wardrobe, safe and a minibar.
Eating and Drinking
The hotel has several bars and restaurants. The main restaurant is called ‘Ballarò’ and is located on the 6th floor. It has tables both indoors and on the outdoor terrace. It serves breakfast in the morning, a really good buffet breakfast, and courteous and attentive staff serve coffee, tea and cold freshly squeezed orange juice to your table. Later in the day it offers an international buffet, antipasto and an Italian à la carte menu.
Other dining options include; ‘Marco Pierre White Grill’, offering British-inspired cuisine, ‘Cave’, a wine bar with wines from the New and Old World, as well as the bar in the tropical garden, ‘Purobeach Urban Oasis’, which offers beer, wine, cocktails and simple bar food. We visited the outdoor bar for a traditional after-work drink and the atmosphere was really something in the garden. It was hard to believe that we were right in the centre of Dubai. Prices, however, are quite high, and the music in the evening is possibly a little too loud.
Although Conrad Dubai is not located at the beach, the hotel does have a magnificent pool area situated in a tropical garden totalling 5500 square metres. The whole area is surrounded by high walls which keep out both noise and emissions. In Purobeach Urban Oasis, there is a large and unusually shaped pool, a waterfall, various statues, a garden, a large outdoor bar and several different areas with deck chairs and sun beds. In the evening, oil lamps are lit along the pathways creating a very special atmosphere. Near the hotel you find a large outdoor terrace belonging to the restaurant, Ballaro, where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The hotel also has a large spa area of 2000 square metres located on the 6th floor. ‘Conrad Spa’ includes a hot tub, relaxation pool, steam room, dry sauna and reclining chairs. All areas are separate for men and women. The spa also has eight treatment rooms and offers massages and a number of other treatments. Next door to the spa there is a large gym.
We had time for an evening visit to the Conrad Spa, which was a positive and enjoyable experience. We especially appreciated the beds that were submerged in the pool so you could lie down and rest as the water bubbled around you and lights on the ceiling dazzled in different colours, simulating a starry night sky.
The hotel also has a large events area; two large event rooms with capacity for 1100 respectively, while three conference rooms and eleven meeting rooms have space for a further 725 guests.
Free WiFi was available throughout the hotel, including in the room, lobby and outdoor garden and pool. Log-in was straightforward and the speed acceptable.
Service and Status Benefits
The service from the staff was very polite, polished and attentive. There were a lot of staff in and around the lobby area to arrange taxis, open doors, and to show the way to check-in and the elevators.
The check-in and check-out was also very proper and polite. I was spoken to by name several times and even got a thank you for my loyalty to the Hilton Group. An additional advantage was that I was permitted to check-in early at 11am, and was able to check-out late at 3pm, both at no extra cost. This was much appreciated with my full agenda in Dubai.
Overall, the service at the hotel was almost perfect. Details, like the staff at the pool area who helped prepare your deck chair with towels, bottles of water and ice-filled glasses, really made you feel looked after.
A really impressive hotel that delivered from check-in to check-out. Elegant rooms, good service and a very beautiful lobby. The superb tropical garden and pool were a worthy substitute for the hotel not being at the beach.
Many Dubai Hotels offer an attractive design and facilities, but often fall down when it comes to detail, sophistication and service. Conrad delivers on all counts.
